Who was Pythagoras

Born on the island of Samos, Pythagoras founded a community in Croton that mixed philosophy, mathematics and a religious way of life. His followers believed that numbers reveal the order of the universe and that the soul passes from one body to another. Almost nothing he wrote survives, but his influence reached Plato and modern science.

Core ideas

  • Reality has a mathematical structure and can be understood through numbers
  • The soul is immortal and is reborn in other bodies, including animals
  • Philosophy is a way of life that purifies the soul through discipline and study
