Who was John Henry Newman

An Anglican priest at Oxford and leader of the Oxford Movement, he became a Catholic in 1845, a decision that shook Victorian England. He explained how we can be certain without strict proof, defended a university that forms the whole person, and was made a cardinal and, in 2019, a saint.

Core ideas

  • Real certainty comes from many converging reasons, not from a single proof.
  • Conscience is the voice of God inside each person.
  • Education should form the whole mind, not only train for a job.

The tradition: Catholic theology

Catholic theology seeks to understand the faith through reason and tradition. Newman renewed it with his study of how doctrine develops and how people come to believe.
