Who was Heidegger

Martin Heidegger was a student of Husserl and published Being and Time in 1927, one of the most influential works of the twentieth century. He investigated the meaning of being starting from human existence, marked by time and finitude. His embrace of Nazism while rector at Freiburg remains a source of fierce controversy.

Core ideas

  • Western philosophy has forgotten the question of the meaning of being
  • Facing our own death makes a more authentic existence possible
  • Modern technology turns everything, nature included, into mere resource

The tradition: Existential ontology

Ontology studies being; the existential version starts from concrete human existence, in time and in the world, to think about being. Heidegger developed this approach in Being and Time.
