Who was Gilles Deleuze
A French philosopher who saw philosophy as the creation of new concepts. He wrote on Spinoza, Nietzsche, cinema, and painting, and with the psychoanalyst Félix Guattari produced bold works such as Anti-Oedipus and A Thousand Plateaus. He celebrated difference, becoming, and multiplicities against rigid models of identity and thought.
Core ideas
- Difference comes before identity: the world is made of variations and becomings
- Doing philosophy is inventing concepts, not discovering eternal truths
- Thought can be a rhizome, a network without a center, rather than a hierarchical tree
The tradition: Philosophy of difference
The philosophy of difference puts variation and multiplicity in the place of identity and essence. Deleuze is its most emblematic name, alongside his readings of Nietzsche and Spinoza.
